Design and Technology

Intent

The intent of our Design and Technology (D&T) curriculum is to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to creatively design and make high-quality, functional products. Through an engaging and challenging curriculum, we aim to:

  • Promote Creativity and Innovation: Encourage pupils to think imaginatively and independently, nurturing their ability to generate ideas and solutions.
  • Develop Technological Understanding: Ensure pupils understand the principles of D&T, exploring different materials and manufacturing processes, while fostering an appreciation for the role technology plays in our daily lives.
  • Enhance Collaborative Skills: Enable pupils to work collaboratively in teams, understanding the importance of communication, respect, and shared responsibility in achieving common goals.
  • Embed Sustainable Practices: Instill an awareness of sustainability and ethics, prompting pupils to consider the environmental impact of their designs and materials.
  • Foster Personal Development: Prepare pupils for future educational pathways by developing resilience, problem-solving skills, and critical thinking through hands-on projects.

Implementation

The implementation of our D&T curriculum is structured, progressive, and well-resourced, ensuring that all pupils, regardless of their starting point, can succeed and flourish in their learning journey. Key elements of our implementation planning include:

  • A progressive Curriculum: Our D&T curriculum allows pupils to revisit and build upon prior knowledge, skills, and concepts throughout their primary education. Each year, pupils encounter increasingly complex projects that challenge their creativity and technical skills.
  • Cross-Curricular Links: D&T is integrated with other subjects, including Computing and Art, which builds on the learning experience and deepens understanding and relevance.
  • Project-Based Learning: Pupils engage in project-based tasks, where they design and make products that respond to real-world problems or needs, linking the learning to their local community and global issues.

Impact

Children will have clear enjoyment and confidence in Design and Technology that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum. Through carefully planned and implemented learning activities, the pupils develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. They gain a firm foundation of knowledge and skills to see them equipped to take on further learning in secondary school.
