Intent:

In line with the National Curriculum, at Kew Riverside, our Personal Social Health and Economic education (PSHE) curriculum will be taught through the Jigsaw scheme of work. It aims to ensure that all pupils have the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, values and skills they need in order to reach their potential as individuals and within the community. Pupils are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing fully to the life of their school and communities.

In doing so they learn to recognise their own worth, work well with others and become increasingly responsible for their own learning. They reflect on their experiences and understand how they are developing personally and socially, tackling many of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. They learn to understand and respect our common humanity; diversity and differences so that they can go on to form the effective, fulfilling relationships that are an essential part of life and learning.

Through PSHE and RSE, we are proud to provide our pupils with the tools and skills they need to become healthy, confident and responsible members of society.  At Kew Riverside we use the scheme JIGSAW. JIGSAW is a whole school approach which helps children to understand and label their own feelings as well as empathise and respect the feelings of others.  As the curriculum progresses each year, we aim to ensure all children know about healthy relationships and their rights. We are aware that children are exposed to external influences that are constantly changing and we ensure that we adapt our curriculum to suit the needs of our pupils. Our main aims in PSHE and RSE are; to provide children with accurate and relevant knowledge which will enable them to become valued members of society, to provide opportunities for children to discuss and explore in a safe environment and to equip children with the skills and strategies needed to build on their own self confidence and self-awareness. 

How is it taught?

PSHE is taught every week by the class teacher for one hour. In the summer term, each class will cover the sex education elements of the curriculum.
